Web Accessibility

This Site has been developed to comply with accessibility guidelines set out by the World Wide Web Consortium. Web accessibility is an important consideration as the internet becomes a more and more important resource in people's lives for things such as education and employment. This means that this site has been designed to allow people to use it easily with alternative technology such as screen readers, or to adjust the size of the text for easier reading. A good reference which explains accessibility in more depth can be found at the following link.

Text Size.

To allow this site to be read easier, it has been developed to allow the text size to be changed by the user. The method of adjusting text size changes depending on the browser being used, but generally an option can be found under the "view" menu to alter the text to your required size. Instructions can be found below for some of the major browsers.

For Firefox, Internet explorer 7, Internet explorer 5 and netscape, you can change the text size by going to the "view" menu and then to "text size", you will then be given the option to adjust the size.

In Opera, you can change the text by going to the "view" menu and then choosing the zoom option.

In all of the above browsers you can adjust the size by holding the Ctrl key and scrolling the mouse wheel.

Access Keys.

Some browsers allow the user to navigate using the keyboard. In order to allow the user this alternative, we have assigned access keys to our links. The way access keys work changes depending on the browser you are using. For example, the homepage of this site is set as the access key "h". so, in Internet Explorer 7 the user would be able to press the Alt key and the h key simultaneously to select the link, followed by the Return key to activate it. Below are instructions on Access Keys for some of the major browsers and a list of the access keys for this site. Access keys for each link are illustrated by the underlined character in the text of each link. For example, in the word Home, if the H is underlined, the H would be the Access Key.

Internet Explorer 7 on Windows - hold the Alt key and the access key, then hit return to activate the link.

Older versions of Internet Explorer on Windows - hold Alt and the access key.

Internet explorer 5 and upwards for Mac - Ctrl and the access key. (unfortunately, access keys are not supported in earlier versions.

Netscape 6 and upwards for Windows - Alt and access key (unfortunately, access keys aren't supported in earlier versions of netscape)

Mozilla on Windows - Alt and access key.
